Fractional AI Leadership

An internal AI voice for boards and execs, without a 12-month hiring search.

Most AI initiatives stall not because the engineering's wrong, but because no one senior is making the calls: what to fund, what to kill, what to defer. We step in as the fractional AI voice in the room: strategy with leadership, oversight with engineering, plain-English readouts for the board. Direction first, delivery second.

Who Fractional AI Leadership Is For

  • Companies with the budget to invest in AI but no senior AI leader to set direction.
  • Boards and execs who need a credible internal voice on AI strategy without a 12-month hiring search.
  • Engineering organizations needing oversight on AI initiatives that are sprawling without coordination.

How Fractional AI Leadership Works

  1. Step 01

    Onboarding and stakeholder alignment

Meet the operators, the engineering leads, the execs, and map where AI strategy currently sits and where it should sit.

  2. Step 02

    Strategy and prioritization

Establish the decision framework, the success metrics, and the roadmap that lets the org say no to bad AI bets as confidently as yes to the good ones.

  3. Step 03

    Execution oversight

Standing reviews of in-flight initiatives, hands-on architecture and reliability guidance, and unblocking the team where senior AI judgment is the bottleneck.

  4. Step 04

    Exec and team enablement

Plain-English exec briefings, technical depth for engineering, and the literacy work that makes future AI decisions easier across the org.

What you get

  • AI strategy document and prioritization framework, in plain language.
  • Standing review cadence covering in-flight AI initiatives.
  • Exec and team enablement materials tailored to your org's AI maturity.
  • Quarterly readout to leadership covering progress, risks, and decision points.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a fractional AI leader actually do day-to-day?

Strategy with the executive team: what to fund, what to kill, what to defer. Oversight with engineering: are we building the right thing the right way. Plain-English readouts for the board. Hiring loops for AI-specific roles. The work is direction first, with enough proximity to the build to make decisions that hold up under engineering scrutiny.

Is this a substitute for hiring a full-time Head of AI?

For most teams, yes for the first 6 to 12 months. A fractional AI leader gives you executive-level direction without the full-time comp package and without a 12-month hiring search. When the function grows past what fractional support can carry, we help you write the job spec and hire your full-time successor.

How much time per week is typical?

Engagements range from 4 to 16 hours per week depending on the stage. Earlier-stage teams need more presence in the first few weeks while the strategy gets set. Once the cadence is established, most engagements settle into a steady weekly rhythm with one strategy session, one engineering review, and async work in between.

Can you also write code, or is this advisory only?

Both, depending on the engagement. Some fractional leaders are advisory and stay out of the codebase. Others, including the founder-led version, will pair on the hardest production decisions and review code where it matters. Direction first, delivery second is the rule, not advisory only.
